Common Everyday Causes of Facial Redness
Everyone will experience facial redness at some point in their life. But if it persists beyond the heavy workout, the cold weather, or the flush of embarrassment-- it can become bothersome and even concerning. Chronically red skin is frustrating. It is often hypersensitive and easily aggravated and sometimes results in flushing, red spots, inflammation, bumps, broken capillaries, rashes, or other unsightly and uncomfortable breakouts. It can feel impossible to manage. However, virtually all cases have an underlying cause, and with an approach grounded in science, it can be treated. Some of the most common causes of redness on the face include:
- Atopic dermatitis or eczema
- Contact Dermatitis
- Over-exfoliation
- Seborrheic dermatitis
- Allergies
- Sun exposure
- Underlying medical issues
- Menopause
- Heightened emotions
- Medication or Vitamins
- Pollutants
- Alcohol use
- Acne
Skin sensitivities Working down to the root cause will help you develop a personalized and successful approach to managing it. It might help to consult with your doctor to rule out any medical conditions that might be the culprit.
Common Medical Causes for Skin Redness
Every type of skin condition is treated and managed differently. Understanding the root cause and triggers of certain conditions can make it easier to treat them and prevent them from developing again in the future.
Here are some of the most common causes for skin redness and how you can manage and address them at home and with the support of your healthcare team.
Rosacea is one of the most common causes behind skin redness and flushing. It is more likely to develop in patients over the age of 30 and can present as redness, irritation, the obvious growth or appearance of blood vessels, and a thickening of the skin, which causes it to take on a leather-like texture.
There are four main types of rosacea, though you may experience more than one type at a time. Because rosacea often presents as other types of skin conditions, like acne, it can be difficult to recognize, but if you notice signs or symptoms, it’s important to speak to your healthcare professional.
When left untreated, it can cause a swelling of the skin around the nose and other side effects. Rosacea is most often managed with topical treatments, so speak with your healthcare professional about the appropriate treatment option for your specific needs.
There are seven main types of eczema. While each presents with unique and specific symptoms, eczema is most commonly characterized by redness of the skin, itching, dryness, and flaking. It can appear in places that are prone to oil production or sweat, where it may show up as bumps or blisters.
Eczema may be triggered by genetic conditions, allergens and allergic reactions, irritants, and hormone changes. Different types of eczema require different treatments, but it can often be managed with antibiotics, topical treatments, and a healthy skincare routine.
Psoriasis is a condition that is caused, at least in part, by an imbalance in the immune system. This will cause your skin cells to produce too rapidly, which leads to plaquing. Psoriasis presents as inflammation, rashes, redness, and peeling. It can also cause flaking or itching.
While it is most common in locations like the elbows and knees, psoriasis can appear in any location on the body.
Treatment for psoriasis will vary, depending on the severity and location of the flare-up, but your medical professional may recommend steroids and topical therapy to start.
The most common type of redness associated with allergens is actually a form of eczema known as contact dermatitis.
Contact dermatitis can develop for two main reasons. The more common type occurs when your skin comes into contact with an irritating material or ingredients, such as laundry detergent or fabric. This can create a rash that is often itchy or painful and usually comes on very quickly.
The other type of contact dermatitis occurs when you are exposed to an allergen, such as poisonous plants or metal from certain jewelries. The rash that develops in response to these types of allergens may appear a few days after exposure and is often a bright red and itchy.
Customized skincare for redness

There are many potential reasons you may be experiencing redness, flushing, or inflammation of the skin, particularly the skin on and around the face.
The good news is, most common causes for flushing or redness can either be treated or managed, to reduce the appearance and the likelihood of the redness and associated symptoms from coming back.
If you notice redness in tandem with itching, plaquing, irritation, or other uncomfortable or painful symptoms, it’s a good idea to speak to your healthcare provider for treatment options and to address any underlying medical conditions.
